New music from Sahg! Featuring an uncanny Mastodon-esque sound.

SAHG have currently released and are now streaming their brand new song and video - "Slip Off the Edge of The Universe".

The songs comes off Sahg’s brand new album “Delusons of Grandeur”, which will be released on October 28.   Has an eerily similiar vibe to Mastodon, no?   ....and I consider that a good thing for song.  I like the direction I see the album going here.

From Indie Recordings:
"Delusions Of Grandeur" is a concept record about a person, whose delusions of grandeur escalate to the level where they consume him completely," explains SAHG's Olav Iversen (vocals, guitar). "From becoming increasingly psychopathic and dominant, he loses touch with everyone around him and isolates into his own imaginary, psychotic world, where he becomes the almighty ruler of the universe. As he stands on the highest peak of his domain and beholds all that he has conquered, he suddenly slips off the edge and floats away, weightless. Helpless and stripped of all power, he drifts further into the open space, until he disappears into the darkness. It's an album about how desire for power and property can distort and destroy who we are."

Mastodon's Troy Sanders Stars in Orange Amps commercial

Alrite, I'll admit this little video commercial bit is pretty dumb, but I can't deny the fact that I also sorta love it.  The video shows Mastodon bassist Troy Sanders in a new advertisement for Orange Amplification. He plays a cocky rockstar whose equipment goes bust, thus leading Orange to heroically save the day.

Which is terribly nice of them, let’s be frank.

Check out the video, which also features a heroic dog, below:

Mastodon side-project band takes on NYC

A while back Mastodon's very own Brent Hinds (vox/guitars) teamed up with Steve McPeeks (bass) to create Fiend Without A Face.   FWoAF's music sound like a unique blend of old-school surf rock & psychobilly, while the vocals of Brent sit right over top.  Its a unique listen that might seem a bit gimmicky to some, but the music is actually really tight and well written.  Either way, seeing as this is a small side project that appears to be 'just for fun' at this point in the game, I would say thats exactly what they were going for.  Well, for all you Mastodon nuts out there, you can now see Fiend in NYC on Oct 26th at Union Pool in Brooklyn.  The show is only 10 bucks and also features Daikaiju and West End Motel.   Who are West End Motel, you ask?   This is Brent's other side project.  Enjoy!

Brothers in metal

It's my brothers birthday today, and since I like to relate everything to myself I thought I would talk about some brothers in metal.  Can you guess these brothers?
1. Rob Zombies brother is a bit younger than him.  What band is he in?
2. Kyle Sanders of Bloodsimple is brothers with what Grammy nominated bassist/vocalist?

Got a guess?
1.  Rob Zombies bro is Spider.  Lead singer of Powerman 5000.
2.  Kyle's brother is Troy Sanders of Mastodon!

Mastodon is the new KISS?

Another version of Crack The Skye was just released by the Mastodon men.  This one includes a fancier package and a bigger booklet of pictures than the last 54 cheaper versions.  I am starting to think they are becoming the new KISS.  What's going on with all the merch they are selling?  Sneakers? check. Stake Deck? check. Pint glasses? Wallets? Lighters? check, check, check.   ...I am not sure how necessary this is.  I love the band, but I'm still sticking to my death wish of a KISS Kasket (I am not kidding) instead of a Masto-coffin (you know it will happen).

Drum dorks unite

Guitar Center announced today that Tommy Lee will finally stop DJing and Street Drum Corp. will present a 'commissioned program' called “Bezerk” as hype for the upcoming Drum-Off Grand Finals, which are set to take place January 8, 2010 (Elvis's birthday!) at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. The drummers scheduled to play in “Bezerk” include Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Matt Sorum (Guns ‘N Roses, Velvet Revolver), José Pasillas (Incubus), DJ Aero, Sully Erna (Godsmack), Jay Weinberg, BANG! and others to be announced as the date gets sooner.  The event wll be hosted by Stephen Perkins  of Jane’s Addiction and will also include a tribute to John Bonham by his very own son, Jason Bonham, along with an exclusive collaborative performance by Danny Carey (Tool) and Brann Dailor (Mastodon).  My guess is that Tommy Lee will join them at some point since he is one of the most entertaining drummers to watch, but ya can't complain about seein' Carey, Dailor and Smith all in one day.  Throw in Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart and I would be in hog heaven!
The actual main event of the night is the performances by five undiscovered drummers who will compete infront of a panel of celebrity judges (including T-Bone, I am sure) to see who will win a prize package worth more than $40,000 and the title of “Guitar Center Drum-Off Champion”.   This seems like a pretty sweet event for any drum dork.  Too bad its in LA.

Mastodon are quite the artists...

The Mastodon men are signed up to help make some Masto-music for and upcoming western/comic type movie, Jonah Hex.  The movie will feature Josh Brolin as the lead and Meghan Fox as his hot sidekick.  There is some actual potential for this movie to not suck though, since it is a comic book movie (as they are basically all good), John Malkovich is in it, and Brent Hinds makes a guest appearance (YES!)  Let's hope the Masto-men can help make this film decent.

Consumer whores rejoice!

Alright, I love Mastodon.... but this is too much.
These guys are starting to enter the KISS realm... sneakers, limited edition singles/LPs for every song, multiple versions of each album, tee shirts for each single, sneakers..... beer.
